4 weeks before Christmas we remember the way the world was before the coming of Jesus.  God’s people lived in hard times, oppressed by Romans, with pagan gods and sacrifices surrounding them. Before that God’s people were captives in a foreign land because of their disobedience to God.   And before that they had prophets that warned them about what will happen if they keep ignoring God.  The prophets did have good news too that was to encourage them to keep trusting God even when all is not going well right now.

The birth of Jesus was foretold by prophets in the Old Testament, with Isaiah 7:14 prophesying, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel."

Jesus came to us through the people of Israel.  Just as God wanted his people to follow and worship him, those who follow Jesus are included as God’s people and are gathered regularly to worship and to renew relationship with God.  Like God’s people we fail. So we also need times to confess and receive forgiveness.

And he promises that when we confess our sins- God does forgive us 1 John 1:9

Jesus' coming brings hope. Historians record many cultural shifts that are attributed to the Jesus world view. A much more compassionate view resulted toward those affected by illness, poverty and loss. A path to forgiveness was found.  We can say a new kingdom was begin with Jesus- God in human form as king.

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The kingdom has been initiated, and we await a time when Jesus has promised to come again as well.
